Safeguarding Policy

Teach Us on Tour is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. This policy applies to everyone representing Teach Us on Tour, including permanent staff, freelancers, facilitators, volunteers and contractors.

1. Introduction

Teach Us on Tour is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. This policy outlines how we ensure that all participants are safe during our workshops and activities delivered in schools and educational settings across the UK.

2. Our commitment

Teach Us on Tour will:

• place the welfare of children and young people at the centre of our work
• create a safe, positive and inclusive environment
• take all concerns about safeguarding seriously
• work in partnership with schools, parents/carers and local safeguarding procedures
• ensure all team members understand their safeguarding responsibilities

3. Legal and statutory framework

Our safeguarding practices are guided by current UK legislation and statutory guidance, including (but not limited to):

• Children Act 1989 and 2004
• Education Act 2002
• Working Together to Safeguard Children (HM Government)
• Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE)
• Equality Act 2010
• Data Protection Act 2018 and UK GDPR

Teach Us on Tour will comply with local authority safeguarding procedures in the areas in which we work.

4. Safeguarding responsibilities

Teach Us on Tour is responsible for safeguarding and child protection, including:

• responding to concerns or disclosures
• liaising with school safeguarding teams
• maintaining secure safeguarding records
• ensuring safeguarding training is up to date

When working in a school, we will follow the procedures and direction of the school’s DSL as the lead professional for that setting.

5. Safer recruitment

Teach Us on Tour is committed to safer recruitment. All staff and facilitators who work directly with children and young people will:

• hold an enhanced DBS check
• provide appropriate references
• receive safeguarding guidance and induction before delivery
• declare any relevant criminal convictions or investigations

6. Code of conduct for staff and facilitators

All representatives of Teach Us on Tour must:

• act as positive role models
• treat all participants fairly, respectfully and without discrimination
• maintain clear professional boundaries
• avoid being alone one-to-one with a child wherever possible
• use only appropriate and professional language
• follow school behaviour and safeguarding procedures

Staff must never:

• develop personal or inappropriate relationships with pupils
• exchange personal contact details or communicate via personal social media
• photograph or film children without school consent
• humiliate, threaten or shout at children
• engage in any form of bullying, abuse, or discrimination

7. Working in schools and educational settings

When delivering workshops Teach Us on Tour will:

• follow the host school’s safeguarding, behaviour and health & safety policies
• report any safeguarding concerns immediately to the school’s DSL
• respect school rules relating to toilets, changing rooms and supervision
• comply with school procedures relating to photography and digital media

8. Recognising abuse

Abuse may include (but is not limited to):

• physical abuse
• emotional or psychological abuse
• sexual abuse or exploitation
• neglect
• radicalisation
• bullying or cyberbullying

Teach Us on Tour staff are made aware of the possible indicators of abuse and how to act on concerns.

9. Responding to a concern or disclosure

If a child makes a disclosure, our staff will:

1. listen calmly and take them seriously
2. reassure them they have done the right thing
3. avoid asking leading or investigative questions
4. explain that the information cannot be kept secret
5. record the concern factually as soon as possible
6. pass the information to the school’s DSL immediately

Staff will not:

• promise confidentiality
• investigate the allegation themselves
• confront the alleged perpetrator

10. Online and digital safety

For online or virtual workshops Teach Us on Tour will:

• use secure platforms approved by the host school
• ensure appropriate supervision is in place
• never contact pupils directly outside the school platform
• follow safeguarding rules equivalent to in-person delivery

11. Data protection and confidentiality

Safeguarding records held by Teach Us on Tour will be:

• stored securely and confidentially
• accessed only by authorised safeguarding staff
• shared only with relevant safeguarding professionals where appropriate
• retained and disposed of in line with UK data protection legislation

12. Whistleblowing

Teach Us on Tour encourages staff to raise concerns about:

• unsafe practice
• misconduct
• failure to follow safeguarding procedures

Whistleblowing concerns will be taken seriously and handled appropriately in line with UK whistleblowing guidance.

13. Training

All Teach Us on Tour team members will receive:

• safeguarding awareness training appropriate to their role
• updates when legislation, guidance or organisational procedures change

14. Policy review

This policy will be reviewed annually, or sooner if:

• legislation or guidance changes
• there is a safeguarding incident
• Teach Us on Tour significantly changes its activities or delivery model
