At Teach Us on Tour, we recognise our responsibilities under UK health and safety legislation and aim to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health wherever possible.
1. Introduction
Teach Us on Tour is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all children, young people, school staff, visitors and members of our team during our workshops and activities delivered in schools and other educational settings.
2. Our commitments
Teach Us on Tour will:
- prioritise the health, safety and wellbeing of all participants
- identify and manage risks associated with our activities
- follow the host school’s health and safety procedures at all times
- make sure our staff and facilitators are properly trained and briefed
- respond promptly to any incidents, accidents or concerns
- review this policy regularly
3. Legal framework
This policy is informed by relevant UK legislation and guidance, including:
- Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974
- Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
- Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR)
- Equality Act 2010
4. Responsibilities
Teach Us on Tour is responsible for:
- planning workshops safely
- carrying out activity risk assessments
- ensuring equipment used by our team is safe and suitable
- briefing facilitators on venue-specific procedures
Our staff and facilitators must:
- take reasonable care of their own health and safety
- follow Teach Us on Tour and school safety rules
- report hazards, accidents or near misses immediately
- act to protect the safety of children and young people
Schools and venues are responsible for:
- the overall safety of the site
- fire evacuation procedures and first-aid arrangements
- identifying any pupils with medical, accessibility or additional needs
5. Risk assessment
Teach Us on Tour will:
- carry out risk assessments for workshop activities
- consider risks relating to movement, equipment, staging and audience participation
- adapt workshops when pupils have additional needs
- review risk assessments when activities or venues change
We will also comply with any additional risk control measures required by the host school.
6. First aid and emergencies
When working in schools, Teach Us on Tour will:
- ensure that the school’s first aiders and procedures are used
- familiarise our team with fire evacuation routes and assembly points
- follow the school’s accident reporting procedures
In the event of an emergency:
- pupil safety will be prioritised
- incidents will be reported to school staff immediately
- records will be completed in line with school policy
7. Use of equipment and materials
Teach Us on Tour will ensure that:
- any equipment we bring is safe and fit for purpose
- hazardous materials are not used unless agreed with the school and safely controlled
- electrical items are appropriately maintained and, where applicable, PAT tested
We will follow school rules regarding stage areas, sports halls and specialist rooms, and the storage and movement of equipment.
8. Safeguarding and health & safety
Health and safety is closely linked with safeguarding. We will:
- ensure appropriate supervision during all activities
- avoid overcrowding or unsafe space use
- stop any activity that becomes unsafe or causes distress
9. Travel and touring safety
When travelling between venues, Teach Us on Tour will:
- ensure our team follow safe driving and travel practices
- allow adequate time for journeys to avoid rushing
- securely transport equipment
10. Reporting accidents and concerns
All accidents, near misses or safety concerns will be:
- reported to the school immediately
- recorded in accordance with school policy
- escalated where necessary under RIDDOR regulations
11. Training
Teach Us on Tour will ensure that team members:
- receive appropriate health and safety awareness training
- are briefed on venue-specific procedures before delivery
- understand emergency and safeguarding procedures
12. Review of policy
This policy will be reviewed annually, or sooner if:
- legislation changes
- there is an accident or incident relating to safety
- Teach Us on Tour significantly changes its activities
